Well about 20 years in a climatology lecture at Uni we were categorically told that all open seas have a net warming effect on global climate, indeed I think that even the open areas of Arctic sea contribute more net energy to the global system than the sub-tropical deserts were there is very little net heat gain as almost all solar energy is just radiated back to space.
So this just sounds like spin unless they mean MORE energy has been stored than "normal".
