Saw a small bunch on grass verge in Langwathby today - first that I have seen in Cumbria.

Still expecting my first through this week back at home.

Now have about 2-3 daffodils in bloom in my garden - that's out of a total of some 30-40 bunches

Still no sign of any daffs here as yet, but they have sprouted very quickly over the last week. Judging from the forecast I think they betterhead back down again !

Anyway here is my list for the last few years.
FiRst Daffodil in full flower (driveway)

17th March 2003
16th March 2004
11th March 2005
2nd April 2006
11th March 2007
15th March 2008
19th March 2009

I think my 2nd April record is at risk

Paul, good record keeping - all quite consistant anyway -
My 3/4 flowers in bloom has not increased and doesn't look like it will for a day or two.

The first daffodil in my 'observation group' came out on 27th March. There have been a couple of other years a day or so later but the latest ever for the first daff was 7th April in 1996. Paul - in 2006 it was 26 March.

The earliest ever was 25th February in 1998!

Of all my seasonal observations its the daffs that vary the most. Also the different positions and varieties make for big differences, which is why its vital to keep to the same plants each year - so long as my husband doesn't go and dig them up :x

On the subject of variations in daffodils coming out .... here are a couple of pages from the book I mentioned once before. It is 'Weatherwise' by John H Willis published in 1944 (on really thin wartime paper!). This chap did weather obs from 1913 to 1942 from his home in Norfolk. The book consists of annual weather summaries, some tables, and sets of plant photos.

The photos here are of 'the same clump of Daffodils on 1st March each year' [I REALLY wish I had thought to take a photo every year!]

1940-42 were the war years when it was cold - looking at those photos certainly evidence of that.
good idea as well.

My own daffs are still as last reported - no more have bloomed yet.

Just recently I have been inspired to write a few lines about the first daffodils of spring....but now I've got stuck...this is the start....one day I may finish it.

'I wandered lonely as a cloud that floats on high o'er vales and hills
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils'.

I shan't give up the day job.

Have to say that my Obs group are still NOT in bloom, those 3/4 heads of previous days have not yet come more.

My next observation has arrived - a bit vague this one!

'Most daffs in the obs group flowering'. That's today 7th April. Not the latest I've had, which was 14th April in 1996.
