Just a few of the stand out months from the Sunderland Rain Gauge.

Driest Months

January 1997 - 5.0mm

May 1978 - 10.0mm

August 1995 - 14.5mm

August 2003 - 19.0mm

Wettest Months

November 2009 - 247mm

October 2008 - 210mm

December 2006 - 197.8mm

July 2009 - 177mm August 2009 - 171mm

Interesting. Those pretty much are in line with my records.

How far back do they go? It is particularly striking that the wettest months are all recent ones.

They went back to 1978 although a few years in the 1980's were missing.

Yes very noticeable that months with 200mm+ only started regularly occurring in the 2000s with oct 2005 and aug 2004 being 2 more.

Summers have got quite a bit wetter in the last 10 years aswell

I find it almost amusing that Sunderlands smashed record wet year of 2012, (1518mm) is not even Keswick's annual average rainfall (1521mm)

The 2 are only 7 miles apart separated basically by Bassenthwaite Lake

two more 200mm months in June 2012 (224mm) and September 2012 (207mm)
