I thought I would start a fresh thread for my research into the rainfall event that started on the 3rd October and ended 10am 4th October
I have mentioned elsewhere on how difficult it has been to find data that is reliable and within the right time frame. From my research so far, very little is on the Met office site and most of it I have found on the Meteo Group website. I have located all the known reporting weather stations and found hourly data graphs. From this I have added up all the rainfall reports to create a final figure. I have started at 1000hrs and recorded the last reading at 1000hrs the following day (0900-0900ncm). This may mean a slight discrepancy at either end, but very few started or finished on a wet note.
Results so far - which I will edit as I go along Honister - 126.6mm Seathwaite - 122.6mm Drumburgh - 96.1mm. Bridgefoot - 96.0mm. Isel Valley - 93.4mm High Snab - 81.6mm Carlisle - 80.0mm. St Bees - 79.8mm Eskdalemuir - 78.8mm Keswick - 76.0mm. Bewcastle - 75.2mm. Seaton - 72.4mm Thirlmere - 68.6mm Scotby - 68.5mm Mungrisdale - 66.8mm Thursby - 65.6mm Mickleden - 63.2mm Brampton - 59.1mm Blencathra - 59.4mm. Spadeadam 49.0mm. Newton Rigg 43.4mm. Kentmere 27.2mm Walney - 25.8mm. Warcop - 19.6mm. Barras - 13.4mm Levens - 10.0mm
I have not included the Cockermouth figure, as the station has not been known before. It does appear to a Davis VP site which would hopefully mean high accuracy and the site is on the met Office WOW site. If anyone wants to a put case forward to have included, please do so. A site visit to confirm even better ! ?
Next step is to email the Environment Agency and see if I can obtain further rainfall gauge data

I was away However I have found that there was 28.4mm from 12.30pm to midnight on 3rd and 40.1mm from midnight until 10am on 4th. A total of 68.5mm in less than 24 hours. (not the largest amount I have had in 24 hours) Anne

I have now had word back from the Environment Agency. They have very kindly sent me their entire data for the 3rd October Please see below for the top rainfall amounts in Cumbria on that date ( appreciate that a few station Alston side will not appear as I think they fall into the North East area even though they are in Cumbria ) I feel there will also be a few anomalies, eg Drumburgh is listed as 81mm, where Carls Met reading was 96.1mm. They have stated its a 0900-0900 figure.

Interesting.
Met Manual 96.1mm AWS tipping bucket 91.6mm EA tipping bucket 81.0mm
I suspect the EA needs calibrating!
