A weather warning was issued by the Met Office for Saturday 22nd July for heavy showers, producing up to 40mm in a short time.
Selection of stations nearest to Carlisle, plus Seathwaite as normal wet place
Carlisle 50.2mm ( awaiting time span, but appears up to midnight on 22nd ) thats 68.5% of their monthly rainfall in one day and probably within a 2hr time span ? Mosedale 34.0mm (0900-0900) Scotby 32mm midnight to midnight Green Close Farm (Hutton) 29.2mm 0900-0900 Skelton 20.2mm (0900-0900) Geltsdale 19.4mm Drumburgh 18.7mm Willowholme 18.0mm Thursby 17.4mm Abbeytown 13.8mm Longtown 13.2mm Brampton 10.9mm Seathwaite 6.2mm
So far Carlisle really standing out
The only bit of news I can find relates to shops in the Kingstown area, Homebase, Next and Hobbycraft all had some flooding as the run off from the carparks came into the shops

I managed to get ahold of some hourly rainfall data from a very kind gent at the Met Office ( Thankyou Mr E)
0900hrs 0 1000hrs 0 1100hrs 0 1200hrs 2.4mm 1300hrs 30.8mm 1400hrs 38.8mm 1500hrs 40.2mm 1600hrs 40.4mm 1700hrs 44.8mm 1800hrs 45.0mm 0100hrs 45.8mm 0200hrs 46.0mm
It remains at 46mm until 9am the following day. This figure goes against the earlier reported 50plus mm and quoted on Met Office site as the wettest place in the UK. Its possible it was a midnight to midnight reading ?
Either way 1200hrs and 1300hrs 28.4mm of rainfall fell
I will await the final reading from the met office next month with my usual data
Any thoughts, was this an exceptional event ?

Think during the storm in July 2001 I had about 50mm falling in 3 hours, with half of that probably falling in well under one hour. Likewise 2 days before storm Desmond think I had nearly 50 mm falling in the afternoon, early evening, with nearly half of that falling in around an hour. So unusual, but wouldn't say exceptional. Not when you consider some of the extreme rainfall events UK has seen. Fancy 30mm in 5 minute's?

My figures for Scotby look similar to Carlisle but not so much rain and a bit later.
The biggest fall was around 14:30 with over 12mm in the half hour. The maximum rain rate was 149.8mm. I have had more than this on more than one occasion!

Now have all the rainfall data in for Cumbria well over 30 stations
Carlisle's 46mm was the wettest on the day and wettest for the whole month in Cumbria, outstripping the usual wet spots of Honister and Seathwaite
Second closest was Honister with 36.4mm on the 27th
Carlisle's figure to me really stands out as an "isolated" rainfall event

9 times more rain at Carlisle than Seathwaite!
Usually the other way around.
