Pennine Snow Report 2016-2017

Post by Admin1 » Tue Oct 25, 2016 8:12 pm

As many of you know this forum has helped contribute to the snow patch survey which has appeared in the "Weather" magazine.

Please report any sightings of snow on the Pennines when you can. I understand that others elsewhere record the Lakeland fells but if there is demand I can create a group for there aswell.

Huge snows fell 21st into 22nd on the tops. Large drifts above 1500ft. Hartside Pass closed for sometime. Diggers required on top section.

This is a photo of an avalanche 23rd November on the fells above Melmerby

Crossfell and GDF are still in full snow cover, signs of some snow slippage on the summit of GDF Eastern side
Snow level is approx 2000ft

Guessing there will be a slight thaw over the next few days until the frosts appear, good chance that these snow patches/drifts could remain until next year now given the current weather pattern, similar to 2009

Here is a photo of me from yesterday doing my own snow patch survey for scientific research ( well thats my excuse )

Still awaiting a day of lying snow - at least for the time being I have a thin cover ( not deep enough to measure)
