January was a fairly normal month with no weather extremes. The average maximum temperature was 7C, slightly cooler than the previous four years but in line with an average January. There were 6 air frosts, the coldest night being the 8th with a low of -6.3C. A couple of mild days near the end of the month gave the highest maximum of 13.2C on the 28th. It was windier than normal with some very strong gusts on the evening and night of the 28th.

The total rainfall for Scotby was 92.8mm, which is just slightly more than an average January. The first few days were very wet, with the wettest day on the 4th having 13.4mm. There was little sign of snow in Scotby despite widespread disruption elsewhere in the England and Scotland. The only real sign was a tiny covering on grass on the morning of the 18th, the same day there were reports of 15 inches at Shap!
