Brampton

March 2018 - March started where February had left off in the grip of winter weather. Snow showers had built up over several days with 22cm recorded at 0900hrs on the 1st, this increased to 25cm, by midday. Then followed the most severe weather I have experienced in my 30yrs residing in Brampton. Strong winds whipped up the snow into huge drifts, wind gusting to 50mph. Roads became blocked, vehicles were stranded on the A689 just a stones throw my my weather station. A train became stuck at Low Row and villages nearby cut off. In just a few hours my 25cm snow had been blown away to just 12cm and was covered in debris. Two further ice days were recorded on the 1st and 2nd a first for March and an overnight low of -8c, the coldest March night on record. Snow remained on the ground until the 5th March but it took several more days for the drifts to shrink and melt away. Further snow fell on the 17th and 18th. As a result March 2018 was the 2nd coldest on record with a Mean of 3.7c, 2.0c below normal.

March was a cold, rather dry month with more snow than we have seen for many years and very bitter easterly winds. The month began with a very cold day when the highest temperature was -0.1C and the minimum -6.3C. There were 13 air frosts in total during March. The average maximum temperature was 8.2C, which is 2C below the normal but still 2C warmer than the exceptionally cold March 2013. The mildest day was the 11th with a high of 12.9C. A total of 11 days reached more than 10C.

The total precipitation during March was 40.8mm. The month began with lying snow that had fallen in the last days of February. A small amount more fell and the maximum depth of snow was 16cm on the 1st. The very strong easterly winds blew this light snow into large drifts in places, especially along roads (although not in Scotby). Heavy rain (16mm) in Scotby overnight on the 6th got rid of most of the snow but elsewhere the drifts lasted to the middle of the month. Further snow fell on the evening of the 17th to a depth of 1.5cm, again being blown by the wind.
