July 2018

Post by Anne » Thu Aug 02, 2018 10:41 am

Another step along the road of the extraordinary summer of 2018, July did not produce quite such high temperatures as June but continued to be dry. The maximum temperatures during July achieved at least 20C on every day except two. The average maximum was 24C, very warm but not quite so warm as 2006 and 2013. The highest temperature was 30.3C on the 1st. Night time temperatures were generally between 10C and 12C, with only a few nights ‘too hot to sleep’ as on the 23rd with a low of 16.7C.

The total rainfall for July was 38.2mm, which is less than half of the average. In fact many recent Julys have been very wet with well over 100mm. At the beginning of the month the long dry spell which began on 21st June continued until 11th July, a total of 21 days with no rain at all. There were small amounts in the following weeks but no proper rain until the 27th when the hot weather finished with a spectacular lightening display, although no rain in Scotby until the following day. The wettest day was the 30th with a very welcome 12mm.

The long dry spell continued from June into July, the ground by now became parches and grass turned brown. The first rainfall fell on the 13th but it wasnt until the 16th that any measurable rainfall fell. The drought was finally broken on the 27th when a large thunderstorm broke out during the early evening, depositing over 36mm in a very short period of time. Making the 27th the wettest day of the year. Overall rainfall was below average at 65%, take out the thunderstorm and the value would have been cut again to just a quarter or so. Mean temperatures were above normal but not as warm as other years. Sunshine hours again were well above normal at 136%
