November 2019

Post by Anne » Mon Dec 02, 2019 3:10 pm

November was another cooler than average month. The average daily high temperatures were 1.5C lower than the normal and the maximum temperature was only 13C on the 1st. There were 13 air frosts with the coldest night falling to -5.8C on the 30th. This was the coldest November since 2010 and the fourth coldest in my 32 years of records in Scotby.

The total rainfall for November was 77mm which is a little below average. The wettest day was the 1st with 14.8mm. We were lucky to be in the drier portion of the British Isles and avoid the flooding in Yorkshire and further south where they had very high rainfall totals.

One of the drier months of the year, and surprisingly driest since June 2019.
Wet start with 40 mm in first two days. We then had dry spells interspersed with light rain, apart from the 10 /13th with 45mm.
Total for month 136.5mm

Mean Max 8.8c -1.0
Mean Min 3.4c -2.6
Mean 6.1c -0.6
Rainfall 76.4mm 80%

Driest November since 2013. Only too colder November since 2000 here.

Highest min of 7.7c stands out at being unusually cool - you'd normally expect a few days in November to stay > 10c here and only a couple of times previously have I seen the highest min just below 10c in November.

November 2019. One thing that stands out is the wind direction at 0900hrs. 13 days from the SE and just 3 from the SW. Rainfall was well below normal at just 59.2%. Temperatures were well below normal but no records were broken. Mean Pressure at 0900hrs isnt a stat I normally mention but this month it was over 8mb lower than normal perhaps indicating lower pressure to our south and hence dryer for our region, shift in the jetstream etc.
