Hello all,

I keep meaning to visit this forum more often, but I just keep forgetting - Obviously this cold weather is really interesting, but I wondered something today and figured that perhaps this was the best place to ask - is there any compilation of the record low temperatures at all the different official cumbrain sites anywhere? I've had a quite internet trawl and I can't find anything apart from a Met Office statement that the lowest ever was -21.1 at Ambleside in 1940.

Can you help?

Thanks very much,

Mike (Current temp -9.6C) ...brrrr could be a cold one tonight

Paul has a load of data on his website - The Cumbria Weather Reports.

I've got Carlisle 14MU RAF weather data (temps/rainfall) on my website going back to 1961.

I think its Alston that holds the coldest record, but I dont have it to hand

Good idea to compile a list though. I made a note of the highest temp aswell, back in 1903 If I recall

Looks like you have started another winters project for me or someone !

keep posting by the way !

It definitely helps to start keeping your records (high/low temp, etc, etc) early doors, i know that when i complied my own, even after only 2yrs it was easy to miss things.

Normally I can trot of some random statistical nonesense, the only thing i can offer is that I know Newton Rigg, holds the national record for the lowest min in April at something like -15C.

The date was 21st January 1940, I did read somewhere about low temps at Daddry Shield in 1881/95 that could have been lower.

The war winters of 40/41/42 were very severe.

That below may be of interest, anyone know or remember this chap?

"re your weather station. Anciently, there was a time when you could hear on the BBC that 'the lowest temperature last night was recorded near Penrith........' This was the time when Bob Thwaites at Morland had a thermometer, and it was his readings that were published. He told me that when he got tired of journalists beating a path to his door, he threw the thermometer away!"

On my e-mails I have a link to my website and this is a reply that I had from a local chap who I have recently e-mailed about other things.
Apparently Thwaites is still alive - will try to find out if he kept any records.

Should be back up and running soon- Have both an ill child+wife looking after both and spent a night in CRI with child last week - 42hrs without sleep!!
